Intestinal Colic Facts – Learn The Entire Truth
Horses With Intestinal Colic
In babies, colic is a part of development, and the infant will outgrow it after 4 months of age. But it is not the same with horses. It is extremely serious, and very often most horses do not take to treatment and become listless and lethargic.
The root of the problem is severe pain in the stomach. The digestive system gets affected, and although the small intestine is 72 feet long, it is not straight but has many twists and turns so when it gets inflamed or if there are obstructions which can also affect the kidneys and liver, the horse is in unbearable pain.
The Structure Of The Gastro-Intestinal Tract
The Gastro-Intestinal tract is one tube made up of several parts. The food starts from the esophagus and deposits it in the stomach and then into the small intestine which is 72 feet long. The intestine is not straight but twisted, and horses have narrower tubes than humans, so there are obstructions which cause severe pain.
Also horses are unable to relieve the pressure by vomiting, so the pain becomes so severe that it is unable to bear. This problem exists in the Southeast parts where Bermuda grass hay is fed to the horses.
There are some horses that may, in fact take to therapy – there are serious cases that may require surgical interventions. It is important for the doctor to distinguish between surgery and interventions. Very often a horse may have a serious obstruction, and therefore will need surgery. In the case of displacement in different parts of the body or cuts all over the intestines, surgery is the only recourse.
There are certain symptoms to be observed in order to give the horse the right kind of treatment. If there is extreme pain in the area of the stomach, this is a serious form of intestinal colic and will need immediate treatment , so it is necessary to call your veterinarian at once, as any delay could cost the horse its life. Another sign is not being able to see rectal remains, and also frequent and lengthy episodes of pain in spite of treating the horse with medication.
There are some cases that are complicated and some that are not. Depending on the seriousness of the problem, the doctor will decide whether surgery is necessary or not. If there is good blood supply in the bowel, a complicated surgery can be avoided. Failing that, segments will need to be taken and sent for scrutiny. The main thing is to keep the horse comfortable and get medical help as fast as possible.
