Colic Babies and Routines – How to Help Your Baby Settle In
Babies with colic often cry at the same time or times each day, most often in the evenings or a night. This can be a cue that your baby is having difficulty settling into a proper sleeping routine, or that he or she is overstimulated and stressed by the current routine of your household. When it comes to colic, babies may not only be dealing with digestion issues, but also stress issues that must be addressed in order to minimize the symptoms.
If your infant is particularly fussy during the times of day when your household is busiest, try to adjust the routine so that he or she is not exposed to too much noise and activity. Babies who are overstimulated by light, noises, and general activity may have more difficulty winding down to rest. This in turn can lead to frustration, crying, and colic-like symptoms. Your best option when dealing with colic in this situation is to establish a routine that is soothing, relaxing, and that gives your baby the proper sleep cues.
In the worst cases of colic, babies may be soothed by changing the scenery – either by moving your baby to another room, or by changing the actual room itself. Avoid bright colors and bright lighting if you want your child to be able to rest. Build a routine around soothing stories, and let your baby wind down naturally. Feedings should take place in a restful environment, free of the bustle and noise that can be a part of some evening household routines.
Try to build a routine that the entire family can commit to, and work together to find a solution to your child’s colic. If you have other young children, story time, lullabies, and other rituals are an excellent means to bring the family together, while still soothing your littlest family member. With colic, babies must learn to expect a routine that will provide support, and a sense of security in order for them to be able to deal with whatever discomfort they experience, without getting completely inconsolable.
Having a colicky baby can be difficult for the entire family, but if you work together, you’ll find that an adjustment to your routine may prove easier than you first imagined. As your baby learns to expect these routines and take comfort in them, the colic may disappear once and for all.
