Colic Baby Water
Gripe Water For Colic Relief – Is it Safe?
Gripe water is one of the many potential treatments that parents of colicky infants try to provide their babies with relief from digestive troubles and colic. Unlike infant gas drops, which are used to reduce gassiness by acting as an antifoaming agent, gripe water is a homeopathic remedy which uses herbs and other natural ingredients to treat the possible underlying digestive troubles that cause colic. There are several different preparations available, and the safety of these treatments depends upon the ingredients themselves.
While most preparations are safe, there are some herbs which should not be given to infants. In particular, the following ingredients should not be given to babies and should not be present in any gripe water treatment that you decide to use:
- Alcohol – although less common in modern herbal preparations, alcohol has been used in some recipes. Alcohol can have severe detrimental effects and should not be given to any infant.
- Echinacea – this herb is thought to affect the immune system and may have unexpected effects on your baby. Avoid treatments that have this listed as a primary ingredient.
- St. John’s Wort – this herb is a natural antidepressant and acts as a serotonin inhibitor, which means that it blocks certain chemicals in the brain. You should never expose your baby to a gripe water preparation containing St. John’s Wort
- Soy and Soybean extract – this ingredient can affect your baby’s hormonal balance, and so should be avoided as well.
Any preparation that contains large amounts of fructose, sucrose, dextrose, or any other sugar or sugar substitute is unlikely to have any beneficial effect, although the sugar itself is not likely to be harmful. Read the label, and be certain to discuss the ingredients with your baby’s physician if you have any questions or concerns.
While gripe water may be effective in treating your baby’s colicky symptoms, you should always be certain that the ingredients listed are ones that are known to be safe for infant use, and that the product you use follows the FDA regulations for herbal supplements and remedies.
