Colic Treatment – Can Baby Gas Drops Help?

There are two main types of colic treatment for infants – homeopathic remedies such as gripe water, and medicinal remedies, such as baby gas drops (also known as simethicone). Whether or not either of these two types of colic treatment will help your baby depends largely upon his or her symptoms. For some infants the only effective treatment is time, as colic usually ends on its own by the time the baby is three or four months of age. Baby gas drops are an effective colic treatment only when the crying is largely due to gas pains. If any of the following applies to your situation, then baby gas drops may be able to help.

  1. Your baby cries shortly after feedings. This crying may be due to a reaction to the formula or breast milk, which may indication of excessive gassiness.
  2. Your baby swallows a lot of air during feedings. If your baby routinely swallows a lot of air, he may have painful gas as well.
  3. You suspect that your baby has difficulties digesting milk protein. Sometimes, digestion problems may result in bloating and gassiness – while you are working on uncovering the underlying problem, baby gas drops may be helpful.
  4. Your baby is breastfed, and the mother has eaten certain "gassy" foods. Foods like cabbage or brussel sprouts can cause gassiness in babies who are breast fed. If your diet regularly contains any of these problem foods, baby gas drops may be able to eliminate the gas and bloating.

Baby gas drops are not an effective colic treatment when crying is due to other causes such as stress, too much stimuli, allergies, or other medical conditions. While they do not cause any known side effects, you should be cautious with overuse of any colic treatment that involves giving your baby medication. Talk to your pediatrician about the fussiness, and have other causes ruled out before you determine that your baby needs colic treatment.
